Bird Island at Century Park was closed Wednesday, after park authorities this week denied rumors that the space was used to farm small animals to provide food for senior officials at the park.

"All of the chickens, ducks and geese are being transported to a chicken farm, and the island will be used only to raise magpies in the future," Chen Feng, manager of Century Park, told the Global Times Wednesday.

A staff member, who was in charge of raising the animals, said on Tuesday that the animals were bred to "maintain ecological balance on the island." But another staff member, from the park's management department, who asked not to be named Wednesday, admitted that the rationality was incorrect, after it was reported that the hundreds of small animals kept on the island resembled a poultry farm.

While Shanghai Park Management Rules do not prohibit animal-breeding at parks altogether, the park admitted it did not have a license for the animals on Bird Island.

The park Wednesday agreed to provide the Shanghai Municipal Afforestation and City Appearance and Environmental Sanitation Administration with a full report on its operations at Bird Island, which the administration will review in its investigation of the case.
