New Thought Crimes portraits will be created on Saturday night and projected on a wall during the event. "The dirtiest secret, as decided by us, will be read on stage. If someone chooses to claim it they can win a prize. But it's a big if, I suppose," joked Forte.
The HAL group passionately believes that expat literature in China must develop. "One of the great things about our projects is that we are catering to a genuine thirst in the expat community for self-expression," explained Wey. "We provide a support vehicle, a network to facilitate the creative China experience."
HAL's event on Saturday is further proof of the burgeoning expat cultural scene in Shanghai. Groups across the artistic spectrum are becoming more interconnected and a common spirit of increasing access to art in an egalitarian, uninhibited, collective and often improvisational setting is becoming more keenly felt.
The 3-story River South Art Center is almost 100 years old. It stages cultural and corporate events and has been "extremely accommodating" to the HAL group, according to Fischbacher.
The winner of the poetry competition will receive a piece of art by Stéfanie Vallée that will be created during the evening.
